Guide To Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter

The temperature is starting to drop outside, and you need to make sure that your vehicle is ready for the colder weather. At Glockner South Point Ford, our professionals are always available to help you take care of your car. We want to make sure that we minimize your chances of having issues during the winter, and that is why we have put together a helpful guide for you to follow. What do you need to do to make sure your vehicle is ready for the cooler weather?

Your Tires

First, you need to pay close attention to your tires. You should start by checking the tread on your tires. You need to make sure your tires have enough life left on them. If there is winter precipitation on the road, you must make sure your tires have enough traction. Then, don't forget to fill up your tires as well. Your tire pressure will drop naturally when the weather gets colder outside, so you need to make sure your pressure is appropriate. Otherwise, it can impact your handling and gas mileage. Do not forget that you should also think about getting snow tires. If you think you will do a lot of driving in the snow, it might be a good idea to make the switch.

Your Brakes

Next, you need to take a closer look at your brakes. There is a chance that certain components of your brakes might need to be replaced. For example, your brake rotors might be worn out. Or, your brake calipers might be worn out. There's also a chance that your brake pads might have to be replaced. Be sure to reach out to us for a brake inspection. You need to make sure that your car comes to a complete stop when you slam on the brakes.

Your Oil and Antifreeze

You should also take a closer look at your oil and antifreeze levels. When the temperature gets colder outside, these fluids compress a bit more, which means that the level might drop. You need to make sure you have enough oil to adequately protect your engine. You also need to make sure you have enough antifreeze to protect the internal components of your car. If you need to top off your oil or antifreeze, it would be our pleasure to help you with that.

Your Heater

Of course, you should take a closer look at your heater. You need to make sure that your heater is working appropriately. That way, you don't feel like you are freezing every time you get in your car in the middle of winter. It may have been a while since you turned on your heater, particularly if you didn't use it much during the summer. It would be our pleasure to take a look at your heater to make sure it is still working as it should.

Your Battery

Finally, we would be happy to take a look at your battery for you. When the temperature starts to drop outside, your battery may have a difficult time holding a charge. You should expect to get between three and five years of use out of your battery, and if your battery is reaching the end of this timeline, there is a chance that you might need to get a new one. We can take a look at your battery to make sure it is still holding a charge. Then, we can help you find a new battery if you think it is time to get a new one.
