Buying a new car is exciting! Prepping your current vehicle for trade-in may not be as exciting, but it is essential.

You want to get the best trade-in price you can for your vehicle to help with the down payment. No one wants to have to fork over more money than they have to for their new car, nor does anyone want an outrageous car payment.

Don't fret about prepping your vehicle for trade-in - it doesn't have to be an agonizing chore. If you're not sure how to go about it the experts at Glockner South Point Ford are always willing to help you out. They have a vast amount of knowledge they are more than eager to share with you. After all, they are going to sell the car. You're trading in and the less work they must do the better it is for them. Making it a win-win situation.

Repairs & Maintenance

Whether your vehicle needs an oil change, or it has a strange knocking sound, you're going to have to at the very least change the oil and find out what and where that knocking sound is coming from. It could be something simple and inexpensive or it could be a major repair. If it is a major repair that is going to cost hundreds of dollars to fix, then you must decide if it's worth it or not to have it repaired. This can be what we call a no-win situation. If you invest the money in the repair, you're going to lose money because you're not going to get it back. If you choose not to repair it again, you're losing money on your trade-in value. So, you have to make a tough decision.

Let's just assume your vehicle only needs a few minor repairs. The best solution is to have them repaired the focus on the aesthetics to bring up the trade-in value.

Detailing

Interior detailing is a lot more important than some people realize. Doing a quick vacuum and a wipe down of the dashboard isn't really detailing.

You can do proper detailing yourself or hire a professional again. Hiring someone to do this for you is costing you money. So, if you decide to do it yourself, you'll need a few items - a good vacuum cleaner (car wash vacuum cleaners work great and will cost you five dollars or less - unless you haven't vacuumed your car since you purchased it, then it will cost a bit more.)

You will also need something to clean the interior dash, doors, etc. Microfiber cloths work well and can be purchased for a few dollars. If you want to leave a nice clean 'new car' scent behind, then try a wet scented cleaner you can get at any auto store or even most department stores in the automotive section. You may even be able to grab one out of the vending machine at the car wash.

One thing you will want to avoid is purchasing any strongly scented cleaners (new car scent). It is acceptable it's a natural scent that doesn't have anything in it that someone could be allergic to.

You will also need to clean the inside of all the windows. You can go with a traditional glass cleaner and paper towels or use a mixture of vinegar and water and a small squeegee to avoid leaving streaks behind.

Cloth spot cleaner and an appropriate brush to clean any spots off cloth seats or the carpeting. Leather cleaner and cloth for the leather interior. The mats will need to be scrubbed down or replaced if they are in rough shape. Some dish soap and a hose nozzle with a high-pressure option will clean most car mats.

To clean the outside of the car, splurge on a car wash that includes the tires and a wax job. It will come out looking shiny and new.

Owner's Manual & Repair Receipts

Hopefully, you saved all these items. If you do not have an owner's manual, check with Glockner South Point Ford to see if they have one. If they don't, then do an online search for one. Organize all your receipts by date starting with the first oil change or repair, get a good cardboard type folder (that will fit in the glovebox) and place them all in it, and put them in the glove compartment.

Kelley Blue Book Value

Check the Kelley Blue Book for the trade-in values for the make and model of your vehicle so you do not ask for more or less than your vehicle is worth. Being educated about the value of your trade-in is important and can save you some embarrassment and get you the correct value for your trade-in.

Trading in your vehicle is not difficult. It does require some work on your part but it is worth it and you'll be glad you took the time to do it.
